„The massacre of stray dogs in the Romanian City of Hunedoara” is an anonymous petition, posted on a website trying to make an appeal to the citizens to take attitude against the way in which the stray dogs are treated at Hunedoara. Besides there are presented untrue situations („the mouth is cut to the dogs, the kennels are full of blood” etc.), this petition is accompanied by some macabre photos, performed during the night time, from which do not result clearly the location, which is not, no way, the animals' shelter of the Zoo in Hunedoara - Romania.

          The situation of stray dogs of Hunedoara is not a „solved problem” yet but this consists a permanent preoccupation both for the Local Council and Public Administration of Hunedoara City.

In 2001 at Hunedoara has been found the Public Service of Knacker's Trade. The Stray Dogs' Shelter operates to the Zoo of Hunedoara City, having approval from the Sanitary – Veterinary Division of Hunedoara, fully complying with legal provisions of legislation in force (kennels according with standard norms from the viewpoint of space and constructive materials, stainless steel bowls for food and water etc.).

          Specialized personnel, endowed with instruments according to legal requirements perform dogs' capturing with protected sticks, guns with admitted sedatives, kennels provided with traps etc. After capturing the dogs are transported to the animals' shelter, where they are fed, somebody is taken care of them, providing them medical treatment if necessary. During the period of accommodation, i.e. two weeks is tried to solve the problem of claim petitions and adoption petitions. In order to avoid the euthanasia for the remained stray dogs have been made financial efforts, but not only, to be sterilized, identified by tattooing and application of brand on dogs' left ear and after two weeks (legal period of accommodation) they are set free to let their place free for other stray dogs of the city, because accommodation capacity of the city allow accommodation of 24 stray dogs only. In situation when animals suffer of incurable diseases or have an aggressive behavior, for those ones who in case of their reback on the streets would put into danger the life and health of citizens, is taken the decision to apply the euthanasia procedure. Dead bodies of these animals are taken over by a company, which is specialized and authorized to neutralize the dogs' dead bodies, the City Hall of Hunedoara having a cooperation contract with this company. A veterinary doctor and a veterinary technician monitor health status of the stray dogs in the animals' shelter.

          Finally we are kindly ask to the citizens of Hunedoara City to not create problems to those ones who are involved in capturing the stray animals, underlining the idea according with animals “have taken shelter” nearby blocks of flats and citizens become familiar with them, but these animals became aggressive with persons outside of this area because a dog “is paying” the food received by defending the place and his master. There is the chance that any animal lover to visit this animals' shelter on daily basis, between 9:00 a.m. and 14:00 p.m.and “adopt” one or many animals in this shelter. Thus, together we will succeed to reduce the number of stray dogs that are set free on the streets and being of nobody they become a real danger for security and health of Hunedoara citizens.
